The dupioni silk trim on the hem has a great texture and sheen in the fabric which allows it to be worn with a lot of different shades of brown without having to match perfectly. I love throwing it under a cool summer dress that needs just a few extra inches to feel comfortable in when bending over and sitting down. The brown accent color is a great tie in to another accessory like a woven brown belt which is a super hot trend right now.

Every so often, Vintage Hem gets emails that catch my attention! One in particular was from Tori at college in Hawaii! Her school has a dress code and they do not budge on hem lengths. I know that situation all too well from personal experience! I went to that same school here in Utah and I was presented with a yellow honor code violation before an exam at the testing center. Lets just say, getting humiliated in public is not the way to prep for a test. I sobbed my little heart out that my dress did not appear long enough to a snarky student employee. She was all too excited to have a little authority. Ill admit my long legs could have used a Vintage Hem but by no means was I walking around campus in a mini dress fit for Vegas! I am glad to see that my little hems can empower other studious girls to cover those offensive knees at their religious schools! I am even happier to see my Eyefull of Lace is getting a delicious education in gorgeous Hawaii embellishing Tori's hemline! Hope all you girls have a great semester!

A moment I was not proud was when I received an honor code violation for wearing too short of a dress on campus at the testing center. It really psyched me out being humiliated in public before an exam. I remember sobbing extensively, so I had to giggle at the following note I recently received on an order:

Please get this to me asap!! BYU Hawaii has some strict rules and you seriously have the only solution to what I thought were my modest dresses (besides buying a whole new wardrobe).

Glad to aid fellow long-legged ladies in need of protection from power-tripping honor code police!

Vintage Hem was delighted to be featured in a fashion show in Orange County. The audience was about 500 young women and their mothers celebrating beauty and modesty in fashion. The organizer Jenny was fantastic in securing us these few shots sporting eyefull of lace, eiffel tower, damsel in distress, and lastly our tulle slip, have a ball. It is always exciting to see how people style their outfits using our hems and we appreciate their kindness in including us!

Here is a cell phone picture of a Vintage Hem converted with the poladroid. The model is one of my fabulous sisters Stephanie. She is the namesake of our slip Effie's Dessert and she wears it beautifully. I am going to try and create a little collection of all the different ways she wears it. To start it off, here she is with Lady Vanilla pairing it with a darling cotton dress and trendy grey boots.

Somewhere along the way one of Stephanie's nicknames became Effie. Maybe it came at the end of a rope where we were skimming the cold but happy waves of Lake Washington on a water tube. Quite possibly it could have been when I fastened her with ropes of tights to her daybed and sang endless rhymes torturing her and her cabbage patch dolls attempting to make her pee her pants from giggles. She has been called Effie as long as I can remember, even when I was walking a tight rope in my life and scared people which way I might fall.

She has always been there for me whether I am scaring her or making her laugh and I love her dearly for it. She forgives me, cheers me, and inspires me. She is a striking woman and can get out of traffic tickets and into VIP easier than anyone I know. The neatest thing about her is that her inner beauty matches perfectly her outer beauty which is a remarkable compliment anyone could aspire to. She gives everyone the benefit of the doubt and has a kind word for those around her. I admire her devotion to her family as she puts them first above anything else. Her husband is as brilliant and handsome as she and together they have created a wonderful family.

One of Stephanie's many talents is fashion. Whether she is shopping at Sak's or Walmart the girl knows how to put an outfit together! Lately, her and Janine have been working together to style Neenie's closet and I am quite jealous of the fun they are having together. Neenie told me that she daringly paired some cheetah heels with an outfit inspired by Stephanie. While it is never good to be overly obsessed with materialistic things, creating physical beauty and comfort to surround our families in is definitely a worthy pursuit.

This time of year when we are expressing gratitude, I especially appreciate how women of different faiths can unite on the importance of balancing fashion and modesty. The media distracts women by focusing only on their outer appearance. Raising three daughters makes me so grateful for a sisterhood among women. Together we can celebrate our beautiful divinity and can reflect our knowledge of it in our apparel. Hallie Lord recently wrote a post on The Faith & Family Blog kindly complimenting our Vintage Hems and her appreciation for how they help her keep her modest standards. If you have been keeping up with the news lately you probably saw this headline from The Salt Lake Tribune, "History in Saratoga Springs: Utah's first black woman mayor." The Gals at Vintage Hem would love to congratulate Mia on a well earned office and look forward to seeing the results her dedicated service will bring to pass in her community. She credits her family and friends with helping her achieve her goals in political service especially her smart & handsome husband Jason seen congratulating her in the picture posted in the Tribune below.

Mia is a dedicated wife to Jason Love and mother to her beautiful children Alessa, Abby, and Peyton. The family is very close and enjoys camping and playing together. Both parents, take an active role in the education of their children and encourage them to pursue their individual passions.
A longtime customer of Vintage Hem, Mia has lately loved Effie's Dessert in Lady Vanilla. She originally fell in love with the moss colored Damsel in Distress which she used in a fun way to embellish her Halloween costume pictured below. Mia is not a stranger to dressing up and wore an amazing 70's outfit to my Birthday Bowling Party. Her fun sense of humor endears her to all including the 6 year olds at my daughters Vintage Glam Birthday where she tried on the prom queen sash and tiara. You are never short of intellectual conversation and humorous entertainment with darling Mia around.
Mia is an adventurous woman and loves travelling, fitness, and games. She works hard and plays hard, a mindset that is shared by her husband Jason. She is a friend to everyone she meets and serves those around her in need. We celebrate Mia as she continues to enhance her community and create a beautiful home for her family.

The first thing we are always asked is, "How did you come up with the name?" Naming the company "Plasticland" was our little tongue-in-cheek way of poking fun at the fashion world and all that it encompasses – from Fake Breasts, to Barbie Dolls, to Paris Hilton, and so on... there is always something in fashion that is so ridiculous and plastic. The name reminds us that Fashion is all just in fun and that we should never take ourselves too seriously :)

We (Rebecca Nyhus & Jordan Berry) started Plasticland back in 2002 as an alternative to the super trendy, cookie-cutter fashions found at the mall. Both of us being artists, we craved a much more unique selection of products that would allow us to express our own individual style. Influenced by a love for music, art, black & white movies, comics & cartoons, all things Japanese, and almost anything from the 50's - Plasticland was born in San Diego, California, in the vibrant uptown Hillcrest district - the perfect match for an alternative fashion boutique. In 2005, the lure of the internet got to us, and we made the decision to close our beloved boutique. A sad day for sure, but we were very excited to focus solely on the new frontier of online business! So we packed our bags and left California, heading east for the great state of Texas.

With our new digs polished and prepped, we were able to expand our site from a fashion boutique, to a lifestyle boutique - adding home decor and gift items to our ever growing catalog of retro, punk, mod, rockabilly, gothic, urban, and Japanese street inspired fashions. Tell us about you?
I love high heels and pedicures. I'm a total sucker for movies based on a true story and I buy everything the door-to-door salesmen are selling. I wish I had more time to read. I'm a budgeter and debt free junkie. I love autumn and my favorite vacations are weekend trips to cold places like New York and San Franscisco. I dream of driving a small, fast car and living in a condo in the city. I hate camping, grocery shopping and doing laundry. I'm a bit of a closet feminist and I homebirthed two of my kids. I collect cake stands, I think I have at least 20. I'm just starting a party consulting business. It's so much work, but I love it. I'm always planning a party in my head.

Tell us about your family?
I have one wonderful husband and four crazy kiddos. We have a lot of fun together. We currently live in Davis County, UT.

What would we find in your refrigerator right now?
Lots of organic greens and vegetables. Nuts & seeds. Hemp milk, almond milk, rice milk. Vegan leftovers. Yeah, no meat here.

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional. with whom would it be?
Audrey Hepburn. She seemed like such a glamorous, sweet, genuine person.

What was the last movie you went to see?
Night at the Museum 2. We took the kids to see it.

What is your favorite song?
Oh, don't get me started. Lately I love "Charm Attack" by Leona Naess and "Rain On My Tin Roof" by the Avett Brothers or "I Still Care for You" by Ray LaMontagne (my husband went to highschool with him). But my real love will always be old 80's alternative.

If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?
Not a superhero, I'd be Mary Poppins.

What is the one thing you are most proud of?
My four beautiful children.

If you could live anywhere, where would you live?
France. But I've never been there. Yet.

What is your best secret (that you're willing to share)?
I hate to shave my legs. I went my whole senior year of high school without shaving my legs, just to see if I could. I was in another crazy phase of not shaving in college when I met my husband. He married me anyway. Even now, I usually only shave on Sunday or for swimming. I wear jeans all summer long, just ask my sister.

What is your favorite Vintage Hem?
I currently have five slips. But Eyelet Tower is my favorite--it goes with everything.

I love to shop and share my finds with family and friends! So opening Karma and expanding it to include more wonderful people, EVEN BETTER!

I believe in Karma, love Karma, try to live for good Karma in everyway! It also works perfectly for fashions, hold on to your favorite pieces for they seem to always "come back around"...

I was born in Payson, UT and so was the celebrity singer Jewel if you can believe it. Yes, there is a hospital in Payson and I was not born in a pool in someone’s back yard. My mom had me when she was 19 and the nurse was giving her a hard time doubting that my mom knew anything about labor and childbirth. When my mom finally insisted she be checked, the nurse saw my head coming covered with a thick layer of of dark hair almost looking like a darling little Navajo baby in need of a papoose swaddling.

I am the oldest of 5 and have been blessed with many inspiring siblings, parents, and relatives through my parent’s blending of families. As a young girl, I was extremely creative and was always donning a costume overseeing production numbers. I was very bossy and intense to those who knew me closely, but shy in public. I was a big helper and very resourceful in my family. I loved to collect paper dolls and had a passion for reading, both hobbies which were fed by the generosity of my Nannie. I would read by a dim light hiding in a covert location in the basement instead of going to bed. Apparently, I have always been entrepreneurial and sold my sister Stephanie some used mixed tapes with additional charges for writing down the lyrics for her. I loved to lay out her clothes for her and spent hours with intricate braids and curls on her golden head. My other sister Kelsey, did not appreciate my hair skills and thought my beauty salon manner was a little harsh with severe braids. I wrestled my brother Chad until he got so big I had to hide in a locked bathroom and I always tried to coddle Winn & Danny the babies.

I loved Debate team in highschool and that is where I met my sweet hubby Jason when I was a sophomore-we have been debating ever since! I went to community college in Imperial Valley CA while Jason finished his Naval enlistment and then transferred to BYU graduating in Finance in 2000. I had an invitation to consider law school which had always been a career interest to me. A calling to motherhood arrived instead of post-graduate work and I spent the next few years in baby bliss refining the domestic arts being nurtured by all the wonderful examples of parenthood surrounding me.

This year I am 32 and well loved and supported by family and friends despite my many imperfections. I am thankful for the opportunity to attend to my most precious role as a mother and dabble with Vintage Hem on the side. I have learned a lot from the many talented people around me and quite a bit from my own mistakes. I am grateful to be a member of the LDS church which enhances my knowledge of the Savior’s great plan of happiness for me and my family. I am truly blessed and grateful for the good parts.

My love of business and true entrepreneurial spirit comes from my mom, Penelope Jay Hansen (Penny). She has always been involved in various activities while still managing to be a superb mother and now, grandmother. Her love for business and keeping busy with multiple tasks while still placing family first, amazes me and I'm always in awe of her ability to drop whatever she has going on if one of her children (or grandchildren) need her. While I am fulfilled in my role as a mother and wife, I knew from the very moment that I thought of starting a business, my challenge would always be to find the balance between family and Vintage Hem. My mom continually encourages me, as she has from day one, to find that time for all things that are important, but that family should always come first.

My mother has always been feminine in her dress and ignited my love for fashion at an early age. As many can attest, you would have been hard pressed to find me in anything other than a dress when I was young, and I'm thankful that my mother possessed such a love of femininity that she enjoyed seeing me in dresses every day. She taught me the value of good manners, not to lift myself up, but to help others feel more comfortable around me; she and my Grandma Sheila are responsible for instilling a love for manners and etiquette that I continue to try and polish which is like trying to polish a huge silver punch bowl, a continual process.

Penny is famous (at least in my circle of friends) for her one-liners. She is always creating new ways to instill important principles in our lives and this is a great and creative way to do it. Things such as "don't throw the baby out with the bath water" or "Never allow how another person to determine who you are going to be and how you are going to act". These phrases, among many others, have been embedded in my heart; they are an integral part of who I am becoming as a woman, a wife, and a mother.

Whenever there is a spare moment, my mother encourages me to read to my children, ask them about their day, take special time with each individual child, and verbally praise them for their unique personalities; she also encourages me to spend time with my husband and prize him for the wonderful man that he is. The best way to lead is by example and my mom has paved the way for me through her perseverance and survival through hard things, her love of life, and her immense dedication and loyalty to her family. Thank you for being my friend, my shoulder to cry on, my babys' grandma, a great travel companion, but most of all thank you for being my hero. I love you mom~ Janine

Vintage Hem was truly inspired by my passion for romance and femininity. The women in my life blessed me with a rich heritage of talented women. My grandmothers are grand ladies that reared children and devoted their lives in service to their families and husbands.

My mother continued that legacy with her example of superfluous domestic talents oozing from her polished finger tips. My mother, Sam instilled the virtue of education in my heart and a love for service in my soul. Sam is a great example of rooting for the underdog and forgetting your troubles in their service of others. My mother has valiant love and faith never giving up and always pursuing the fearful endeavors of new life challenges. I admire her courage and fortitude, and most of all appreciate her example that when life gets hard you put your head down (beautifully coiffed of course) and get to work.
This beautiful woman I call mother gave me the gift of life and many talents to enrich it. I am so thankful for her continued love and support as I forge my own way into motherhood with 3 darling dollies and a little man on the way. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a mother. It is the best job in the world because of the diverse opportunities it allows you to explore. Without my little family to tend to I would be a complete mess blowing about the billows of the world. Family grounds me and inspires me to be better.

I am grateful for all the women who nurture me and educate me including friends many whom I have come to know through this fun endeavor Vintage Hem. As we celebrate Mother's Day, I praise all woman who love those around them including strangers in need and promote loving goodness in the world. Tell us about you?
My name is Alison Holtom Montgomery and I born and raised in Idaho Falls, Idaho. I am the second of five children. My father was my high school principal and my mother an OB nurse.
I graduated Nursing School in 1993 from Ricks College. I am a Registered Nurse and currently work in an urban Pediatric Emergency Room, we are the last stop pediatric ER in the Southeast. That means we see a lot of yucky things.. Before jumping into the ER rush, I was an OB nurse for a decade..
I was a major tomboy, who only wore dresses on Sunday to church as a child. Magically one day when I was 16 I started liking dresses and shoes.. I played many high school sports, volleyball, basketball, softball and track. Needless to say I don't participate in the last one anymore..
My hobbies are Organic gardening, Painting, Shopping Blogging, Coaching and Photography.
I also believe there is a supermodel lurking in us all!!!

Tell us about your family?
I married my hubby in 1993, just months after graduating from nursing school. He was stationed in the Navy in Idaho Falls and a girlfriend of mine and I went to work out at the Navy gym, we walked in and I saw him across the basketball court and turned to my friend and said "I am going to marry him".. She laughed, at that time I had a different boyfriend every other month.. This was in Spring of 1992. Here we are 16 years of marriage later and 5 kids.
While married I have lived in the Seattle, Washington area, Boise, Idaho and in 1999 moved to Atlanta, Georgia and have been here ever since.
My kids are 14, 13, 11, 8 and 6. It is kind of freaking me out that I will have a high schooler next year.
We are a sports loving family. All the kids play team sports almost year round. I even coach my youngests T-ball team.

What would we find in your refrigerator right now?
What wouldn't you find? Here is a snippet of what is in there.
7 gallons of milk, 8 dozen eggs, 10 pounds of butter ( I love butter),
Flan, yogurt, condiments, sour cream, Dr. Pepper, etc. etc. I have garbage disposals at present. My oldest two are boys that are growing. the 14 year old is near 6'4" and the 13 is near 6".

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional. with whom would it be?
I would trade places with my grandmother Bessie. She was born in 1906 and had a young family during the depression. I would love to experience what life was like then and compare to how different it is now. She worked all day every day until she passed away at the rope old age of 94 in 2001. I would walk a mile in her shoes. (I love my grandma too...I would take her back in a second, she was my idol in so many ways, a woman of class and elegance, love that Alison!)

What was the last movie you went to see?
Australia with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. I had to drag my hubby to see it with me.

What is your favorite song?
This may freak some of you ladies out, since I am all about modesty. I have a Heavy Metal, Hard Rock side to me.
My favorite song is One by Metallica..

If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?
I would be able to fly!! Go anywhere at anytime. That would be Sweet!

What is the one thing you are most proud of?
When I set out to do something, nothing stands in my way. Like a good friend of mine told me, ( when he knew me "back in the day" meaning teenagedom), you got everything you wanted, I became a nurse, I have lived in different places, I found my prince charming and I had those five kids.

If you could live anywhere, where would you live?
I would love to experience a small village in Italy!

What is your best secret (that you're willing to share)?
I am addicted to Dr. Pepper and to high heels. Currently nearing 50 pair of heels alone.
Most of my name brand clothing comes from Goodwill. (having a great Goodwill is a plus to living in a great place)

What is your favorite Vintage Hem
That is a hard one, It really all depends on the outfit I am wearing.. Eyelet Tower is tops, with Dot the Great coming in Second and rounding out the top three it is a tie between Have a Ball (black and white) I love vintage hem (those of you who have read my blog, know my deep affection for it) because it changes outfits in a pinch and I am 5'10" tall and love to lengthen out my skirts, so my spider veins don't show. ;) (I think Jenn and I would have to agree with you...at least for now, without bringing the new Spring line into the mix...Eyelet Tower is our favorite slip!)

Tell us about you?
I describe myself as a "world traveling mama of two". I have been working and traveling internationally since 2001!
I started in Belize and have since spent all of my time in Asia; China, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, and next week, Indonesia!
My first son was born in 2004 and accompanied me to Laos when he was 7 weeks old.
Other things I am passionate about are good ethnic food, vegetarian cuisine, "green" living, good books, art, crafts, and education!
I think I will never have enough books (especially children's books), toys made of natural materians, art supplies, or kitchen gadgets (I just got a new panini maker with our credit card reward points!).
Ironically we are currently downsizing our possessions to move into a smaller home.
I have an MA in teaching but I enjoy researching Early Childhood education now that I am a mom of a preschooler and a toddler.

Tell us about your family?
I have been married to Nick for 9 years, and we have two handsome and hilarious young sons! Jonas (Jojo) is 4, and Deacon (Deeds) is 1.

What would we find in your refrigerator right now?
Leftovers from dinner last night. I made "Central American style rice" and Frijoles.
We also have 1/2 of a watermelon, some camembert cheese, mini reeses cups, some apples, wheat bread, skim milk, water, apple juice, and tons of various sauces and salad dressings.

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional. with whom would it be?
I think it would be fun to live the life of Indiana Jones! An Archeology professor by day, and an adventurer with a cool jacket during his off time. (love that!)

What was the last movie you went to see?
I haven't been to a movie in the theatre in ages; I think the last one was Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End.
But the last DVD I watched was a weird, somber movie called Where Angles Fear To Tread. I don't recommend it.

What is your favorite song?
I know and love a lot of 80's songs. "Livin' on a Prayer" is one of my faves!

If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?
I have always been thrifty, so maybe I would be able to supernaturally find the best deals all over the world.

What is the one thing you are most proud of?
One thing?!
I'm proud of my son Jojo, who started reading for the first time last week! I'm proud of my brother, who is the drummer for a band that played on Letterman last summer!
I'm proud that I have been able to experience traveling in several different countries, even though I don't have a movie star budget!

If you could live anywhere, where would you live?
Thailand is a beautiful place that I have traveled to many times; lots of Americans choose to retire there because of the great climate and international quality medical care
I have never been to Europe, but I would love to experience some kind of provincial village life in a place like Italy, Spain, Germany, or somewhere in Scandinavia.
Maybe I would just be happy to go to an IKEA. I haven't been near one since 2006.

What is your best secret (that you're willing to share)?
Hmm...how about I really like to sleep, but I don't seem to need very much these days. I stay up late and get up early. Maybe I have a more geriatric metabolism these days?

What is your favorite Vintage Hem?
I love my Have A Ball in white, and I also have my eye on Effie's Dessert and Eyelet Tower! I can't wait to see what Vintage Hem comes up with next!
I love Vintage Hem because I'm tall (5'8") so skirts and dresses often don't seem to look right on me. I don't want my entire leg to be exposed, so Vintage Hem gives me a way to look cute and modest without getting my dresses and skirts tailored.

Amara has been opened for 4 years, and is a unique little boutique. They started as just a day spa in the basement of Leigh Bennett's Orem home and have now grown to a large basement in her new home in Lindon where they currently have ten employees. Amara started carrying clothing after the first year they were open and the clothing side of things has gone crazy! A few of the hot items they carry are: Anoname jeans, Miss Me jeans, Sang Real Jeans, See Through Souls, Lime Ricki swimming suits, tops, shoes, Petunia Pickle Bottom diaper bags, etc…. Amara owner, Leigh says that Vintage Hem fits right in with their style and fun culture!

What inspired you to start up your business?
I have loved the industry ever since I went to school and have such a passion for esthetics, and my other second love besides my cute little family has always been shopping, I am a shopaholic so the boutique part just naturally happened:-)

What is your fav thing to wear from your store?
Right now I love Anoname jeans, they fit amazing, the Miss Me sweat suits, they are to die for, and of course we all love our Vintage Hems and can't wait till the new styles come out!!!

What is the best compliment your store received from a customer?
Our whole business was formed from word of mouth so that is a huge compliment. Most people say that our customer service is awesome and it doesn't matter who they see, it's always the same!!!

What are your top 3 secrets to running a good business?
Customer service "over the top", treat your employees like you would any customer, and staying educated on the latest trends in skin care, make-up, clothing etc…….

Who is your best employee and why?
Truly, all of my girls are the best, they each add something great to the spa, if they didn't they wouldn't work here:-) that's a tough one to answer!!!

One of our local retailers, Whimsy Clothing is carrying several styles in their 4 stores in Salt Lake County. Currently, Whimsy stocks Have A Ball in gold, white, and ivory along with Eyefull of Lace and Damsel in Distress. These slips compliment their inventory which has a flair for showcasing unique fashion trends at a respectable price.

Whimsy was started on a “whim” to be a fun unique place to shop that offers women’s clothing and accessories in a boutique setting at affordable prices. Eliza magazine: Style and substance

Summer Bellessa didn't intend for ELIZA magazine to be anything big. Just a side project. You know, similar to scrapbooking, she joked during a recent interview.
But when your "hobby" gets featured on "Good Morning America," Fox News and in Newsweek, things change. And for Bellessa, it changed in a big way.

Her magazine, which is based in Los Angeles, suddenly hit the national stage. People were jumping to subscribe to the magazine, which showcases stylish yet modest fashions and also "uplifting" entertainment and lifestyle articles.

For Bellessa, the growth of ELIZA is a clear indication there is a market for modesty. Women want to know about top fashions and trends but without having to wade through articles and images they may view as inappropriate, she said. Her print-run is 10,000, and her magazine can be found in stores across the nation, including Barnes & Noble bookstores in Utah.

"We have found there is a group of women whose voices aren't heard," said Bellessa, who serves as editor-in-chief of ELIZA. "They still want to buy fashion magazines … but they don't cover their view."

You can sense Bellessa's passion as she talks about her magazine. During a recent interview at Bambara restaurant in Salt Lake City, she talked about how articles are selected and trends presented in the magazine.

It's a careful balance to determine how people will perceive things and the message that will be sent by words and images. In the most recent issues of ELIZA, Bellessa said she and her colleagues were careful to call it their "marriage" issue instead of a "wedding" or "bridal" issue.

They wanted to promote their belief that getting married is about more than the wedding and a fancy dress. Sometimes the words "marriage" or even "wife" have bad connotations, said Bellessa.

"We wanted to make sure we could show how fun marriage really is and that it's worth it, working hard to build that relationship," she said.

But the magazine is by no means "prudish." Bellessa, who is in her late 20s, is a former runway model and is still represented by Ford Models. You can sense she knows fashion by the way she dresses and the clothing featured in her magazine, which is published quarterly.

There are beautiful images that showcase trends such as layering, or wearing lace and other vintage-inspired themes. Also, articles and images show different ways to apply makeup, or highlight different styles of wedding dresses for sale.

"We attract really creative people whose work is right up there with Vogue and Glamour and it's so much fun to be able to do that," said Bellessa about the talent that helps produce her magazine.

Laura Field, marketing director for Layers Clothing, which is based in Draper, said her company "loves" ELIZA magazine because of its positive spin on fashion. Layers was started in 2005 by Michelle Boley and three friends and is now represented in nearly all 50 states, the Philippines and Canada.

Field believes ELIZA magazine is a great outlet for "amazing" fashion and really demonstrates how people can mix-and-match high-end pieces with affordable, trendy clothing. Layers advertises in the magazine and is featured on the back cover of its most recent magazine.

"Summer, ELIZA's editor-in-chief, has tapped into a world of fashion that is so needed during these times of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll," Field said.

Jennifer Jensen Young, the owner and creator of Draper-based Vintage Hem, also advertises in ELIZA. For her, the magazine showcases true feminine beauty without too much emphasis on skin.

Young sells slips women can use to lengthen skirts or add a touch of style to their outfits. She said she loves vintage styles that are romantic and feminine.

"I have three little girls and I love the idea they can pick up a glamorous magazine and look at it," said Young, who has more than doubled the size and revenue of her company in two years. "The women in ELIZA are revered for style and beauty, but they are in modest clothing."

For Bellessa, that is the goal: to showcase styles, trends and people that are beautiful yet substantial. Some of the women featured on ELIZA's cover include Brooke White, who appeared on American Idol last season, and Nicole Lapin, who is a young anchorwoman on CNN.com Live. We don't want to put people out there who are glitz without any substance," Bellessa said. "We want to make sure they're really someone who should be looked up to."

Summer Bellessa was born in Chicago and now lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Kerry. She began modeling about age 4 and started a full-time modeling career around age 16.

Bellessa has done runway modeling, appeared in catalogs, magazines and also commercials, including some in Japan. She was married six years ago in the Los Angeles Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

• Tell us about you?
Well, my name is Heather. I’m 24 and currently live in downtown Salt Lake. I am a visual arts major and will be graduating from BYU come August, yay! Along with being an artist, I love everything in the fashion industry whether if it’s modeling, photography, clothing design, makeup artistry, and whatnot. I also LOVE dancing and have a huge passion for music. In general, I’m a very happy person, love meeting new friends, and believe it’s the experiences in life that make you who you are.

• Tell us about your family?
My family is awesome. I have the best mom in the world and my dad is pretty much a genius. I am the second oldest of seven and think it’s the perfect spot! I’ve learned from my older sister since she’s had to experience everything first, but, like her, I am a big sister and get to see my younger siblings grow up. Then there’s Alfie, only THE cutest puppy ever, who I’ve recently adopted.

• What would we find in your refrigerator right now?
I’m not much of a cook, so I’m all about simple and quick. Some things I have are yogurt, salad, whole grain bread, grapes, apples, leftovers from Olive Garden, V8, milk, and a chocolate silk pie, ymmm!

• If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would it be?
The first answer that came to mind was Sleeping Beauty, haha. But seriously, I’d like to not only frolic through the forest amongst friendly woodland creatures who are charmed by my beautiful singing voice, but to also have a handsome prince who’d slay a dragon in the course of a perilous quest to rescue me. J

• What was the last movie you went to see?
Australia. (Hugh Jackman- tanned and muscular, speaking with his native accent, and taming wild horses in a romantic epic - need I say more?)

• What is your favorite song?
I’m not sure if I have a favorite, but I looked in my iTunes for help. The song marked with the highest play count is “The Scientist” by Coldplay. Love it.

• If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?
Probably Telekinesis, the ability to control objects with my mind, because if I’m curled up on the couch with remote in hand and have ordered a pizza delivery, why not go all the way and be as lazy as possible? J Just sayin… it could come in handy.

• What is the one thing you are most proud of?
I have the best family and most amazing friends in the world and they always come first. I’m proud to be a big sister, caring daughter, and devoted friend. I try to fill those roles the best I can and truly be there for each person, which may be something simple but is incredibly rewarding.

• If you could live anywhere, where would you live?
I lived in Hawaii when I was little and love the idea of sunny beaches where I just let my hair go frizzy and wear flip flops all the time, but I’d also love an exciting city where I can delve in current music, fashion, and pop culture in general. So it’s a tossup!

• What is your best secret (that you're willing to share)?
When I get ready for my day, I like putting thought and detail into a “look” because I believe it’s the small subtleties that count. For example, putting on a sentimental piece of jewelry, or making sure to curl my lashes. It’s so simplistic, but doing so gives that extra oomph and can make someone feel that much more confident…. kind of like slipping on a Vintage Hem. J

• What is your favorite Vintage Hem?
Uh oh, I can only pick ONE? Well, my current fav I’d have to say is Effie’s Dessert from the spring collection. I like this one because it can give an outfit a sweet and almost old-fashioned look, yet make another outfit look more avant-garde and completely unique. As many people know, Vintage Hem is not only about lengthening a skirt because it’s a bit too short, it’s also a fashion statement, and I like to be a stand out. (and we totally think you do stand out...you're gorgeous and you have a light about you that radiates!!-we love you Heather!)

I also have five nieces and five nephews.

Typical milk, bread and cheese. But also, fruit (apples, peaches, pears, apricots) and a bunch of leafy greens for our seven guinea pigs (you go girl!)

Whomever is currently dancing with Derek Hough (Dancing With the Stars). I would love to be his Ballroom partner any day of the week!

It really depends on the day and what CD I am listening to. But, I can never get enough of Jericho Road's "You Melt the Madness"

The familiar caution that your slip is showing could become a fashion statement.

On Saturday, a Draper woman who designs frilly slips that peak out from under shirt hemlines was named a finalist in The Next Big Thing contest. The announcement was made during the Total Home & Gift Market show in Dallas.

The winning product, however, may not be a big seller in Utah. It's a spill-resistant martini glass. The goblet, designed by Renee Williams of Rowlett, Texas, has the traditional shape of a martini glass, with an added curved rim -- much like a toddler's sip cup -- to prevent spills.

Jennifer Young, founder of the Utah-based Vintage Hem, was one of two finalists from a pool of 100 contestants. Young, 32, got her idea from a favorite dress that had an attached slip which fell below the hemline. Why not design a slip that could be worn with other dresses and skirts -- particularly ones that are a bit too short, she reasoned.

"A slip could add a fun, romantic flair when worn underneath different outfits," Young said. "Then I started thinking about different ways to embellish hemlines."

Meredith Hite, spokeswoman for the Dallas Market Center, which stages 50 exhibitions each year, said Young's product caught the judges' attention "because it's a low-cost way to change your wardrobe while adding a little spice to what you wear."

To attract online customers to her fledging business, Young paid for a television ran after the closing LDS Church conference session in the spring of 2007. She choose the Mormon conference because women are advised to dress modestly.

Young paid particular attention to two slips she had designed that sparked the most interest after the single commercial was broadcast. One undergarment was edged with a simple tulle netting and the other had a single row of eyelet lace.

The first year she racked up $12,000 in sales for the six months she was in business and last year revenues totalled $20,000.

Young, who runs the business from her home, calls herself a one-woman show. She manages her Web site, Vintagehem.com, as well as the company bookkeeping, and stocks her inventory in the downstairs' basement. She holds a finance degree from Brigham Young University, and says she has learned from watching her husband Jason, whose career is in sales.

The couple has three young girls. And, Young is expecting their first boy in May, "so I'm hoping we can afford to hire some employees soon."

Her line of undergarments comes in black, blush, white, ivory, gold and polka dots. Prices start at $14 for the tulle slip to $28 for one edged with three rows of one-inch eyelet ruffles.

Young is presenting her Spring Tea collection for spring and summer hemlines during the Dallas Market Center show that runs through Monday. As a finalist, she was awarded free booth space and travel to the international market.

The second product finalist is a product skin-care line for girls age 9 to 15 years old, marketed by a New Hartford, Conn.-based company. Winners were selected by four judges, based on the contestants' product, trade space presentation and production plan.

The economic downturn hasn't curtailed entrepreneurship. More than 100 people submitted new product ideas to the Next Big Thing, a contest sponsored by the Dallas Market Center. Next year, after thousands of wholesale buyers get a look, you may spot these products on your favorite store shelves. The three finalists are:

The Sipatiniz (pronounced sip-a-tee-neez) is a spill-resistant martini glass created by Rowlett resident Renee Williams. About 18 months ago, Ms. Williams said she started looking at her favorite shape drinking glass and decided even it could be tweaked for the better. She orders non-alcoholic drinks in a martini glass because, she says, "it feels so elegant." Her Sipatiniz glass is elegant and practical and "allows you to mingle with ease." An IT professional, Ms. Williams said she's had other ideas but never acted on them.

Good for You Girls says it's the first 100 percent natural skin care line for girls ages 9 to 15. Created by Kim Grustas and Grace Havasta-Petrarca of New Hartford, Conn., the kit includes a cleanser, toner and moisturizer made of natural and organic ingredients. Products are made without anti-aging or other ingredients that are too harsh for young skin. The two mothers used only natural baby products on their girls but then couldn't find products for them as they got older.

Vintage Hem can make any skirt or dress more romantic or festive. Developed by Jennifer Young of Draper, Utah, the slips add layers and length in tulle, silk and other fun fabrics. Ms. Young made the slips to enhance her own wardrobe in an affordable way.

The finalists were selected by a panel of judges from the wholesale market, and the winner will be named in January.

Finalists get airfare and hotel accommodations to attend the Dallas Total Home & Gift Market FINDS Temp Show on Jan. 16-19. They will show off their ideas in complimentary exhibit space in front of 50,000 domestic and international retailer buyers.

The winner gets to come back to the June show and receives a prize package worth more than $10,000 that includes time with branding, public relations and visual merchandising experts.

The Next Big Thing?

The Dallas Market Center has announced the finalists for their “Next Big Thing” contest. They received over 100 entries and have narrowed it down to three, one of which is from Rowlett, TX. Congrats to Renee Williams, founder of SIPATINIZ, a spill-free martini glass (pictured at left). Other finalists include Good For You Girls, a natural skincare line for teenagers and Vintage Hem (my personal fave), slips that add a little something extra to the bottom of skirts and dresses. The three finalists will receive a free booth and travel to the upcoming Dallas FINDS Temp Show January 16–19, 2009. During the show the finalists will be judged based on their product, trade space presentation, and production plan. The winner will be announced on Saturday, January 17, 2009 and will win a prize package worth more than $10,000. Talkers, who do you think should win?

My mother and grandmother are great role models to me.
They are so classy & feminine including perfectly manicured
nails and colorful lips. From a young age, my mom educated
me that presentation in dress is an important detail including
never showing too much décolletage or wearing too short of a
hemline. I hope I convey that to my 3 young daughters
emphasizing that the most beautiful accessory a woman will
ever wear is the smile upon her face.

Nonetheless, I am yet a woman caught up in the vanities and
frivolities of our sex. I am passionate about fabric, colors,
and textures. One day, I was admiring the ruffled hem of my
favorite fall skirt and wished that more of my wardrobe
reflected that same romantic nostalgia.

I was an avid scrapbook designer and home decorator, so I was
regularly accustomed to embellishing everything with a shabby,
chic look. The idea occurred to me that I could embellish my
hemline as well creating one slip that would add trendy layers
and much needed length to my skirts and dresses. When I would
rock my babies to sleep, I would create designs in my head while
singing them lullabies. As they got older and I was going through
a lot of personal growth, I knew that it was time for me to combine
my passion for design and my education in finance to create a
company based on my innovative slips that are meant to be shown.

As a young girl, my father showed me the beautiful mansion of
the inventor of Velcro, and I remembered that mansion in college
when my professors extolled the importance of innovation. If ever
I was going to start a business, it was going to be something that
no one had ever created before, and with my Vintage Hems I
found my Velcro!

Janine Hansen Ottley and I are bosom buddies like Anne and
Diana in Green Gables. One day, she chatted me up about an
article she had read about women entrepreneurs in Country
Living Magazine and remarked that we should start a business
together. I had read the same article and swore her to secrecy
about my new invention that we would bring to reality together.
Because I had been designing it for a couple of years in my head,
when we actually started business we got a manufacturer right
away and were selling online within 3 months. I credit the fact
that it was truly divine inspiration that all the details fell
into place so readily to make it happen. Janine and I celebrate
showcasing the beauty of womanhood in fashion while showing
reverence and respect for our divine heritage by dressing modestly.

I am thankful for the inspiration of my beautiful daughters:
Rachel, Rebekah, and Ruth, and ever grateful to my supportive

Nicea & Reagan from Good Things Utah helped us show their viewers how Vintage Hem can create festive holiday wear out of a skirt/dress already in your wardrobe!
